I know that in a normal fast you arent suppose to eat or drink anything but water so you dont trigger your digestive system into working again and have to start the fast all over. But is this critical to the weight loss or the detoxification? Basically what Im asking is does stopping your digestive system or however you want to say it play a role in the loss of excess body fat during fasting or is it purely for the detox
Actually fasting is a great way to lose weight, you lose an average of 1lb a day in body fat depending on how fast your metabolism is. You just cant overeat after you finish fasting. But anyway, BACK TO MY QUESTION

hello. i am almost 14 years old, 5″3, and weigh about 105lbs.

I am planning to start a water-only fast as of tomorrow and i am going to try and stick to it for at least about 10 days or so. I am not doing this solely for weight loss (mostly for detoxification and to learn to apreciate food and suffice my cravings etc), but i would like to know how much weight i could lose after 1 week (7 days) of water fasting?

I know what alot of people think about water fasting but trust me ive done my research so please no “its not safe/healthy” answers.

thanks.
please note that a water fast does not mean you dont drink water – it means that the only thing you consume is water so you wont dehydrate.

Well, that’s exactly what you’re going to hear. You’re almost 14 and a water only fast is a bad choice. Period. Shoot, it’s a bad choice if you’re 34..

You’ll learn to appreciate food alright. You’re going to be hungry and for good reason. You’re planning on starving your body. Personally, I think you need to re-think your position. You say you’re not doing it solely for weight loss, but you want to know how much you can expect to lose?

The other thing you need to consider is you’re not overweight at 5’3 and 105lbs, so you’ll be losing muscle too. Not a good choice.

It seems like everyone attacks dieting with lectures on anorexia and bulimia. I just read about someone wanting to reduce their caloric intake to between 300-400 calories a day and she only got one actual answer, the rest were comments “You’re going to die.” Granted, the question seemed extreme, and there was more desperation behind it than anything else…but if you consider the alternative…obesity is just as deadly. Atherosclerosis, Myocardial Infarction, Diabetes..and the list goes on and on. Overeating is just as serious, if not worse. Then, when you consider the countless websites that talk about “fasting” for 30 days on WATER ALONE for weight loss and body detoxification, how can you justify what’s healthy and what’s not? Starving yourself for thirty days is acceptable if you’re doing it to detoxify your body…but cutting your caloric intake down is anorexic? It was my understanding that your body had three sources of energy…glucose, glucagon, and fat. Once your body is starved of glucose and glucagon, it turns to its fat store, and you lose weight. EVENTUALLY, your body will eat away at its muscles, but not before the fat..Someone please correct me if I’m wrong. I’m not anorexic or bulimic, nor do I approve of such behaviors. I just see people seeking actual dieting advice being shunned for it. I’m just trying to understand why.
I’m not looking for dieting advice either. I don’t have a weight problem.

Haha. You sound really really educated about this kind of stuff.

I think people are being criticiced for seeking diet advice because in my expierence with Yahoo Answers alot of the people are Underweight already and still they want to lose more weight. When you thing about it there are 11 and 12 year olds on this site wanting to know if the Master Cleanse or drinking grapefruit juice all day will help them lose weight.

And usually people are not shunned for asking for diet advice when they actually need it. Like if there overweight or obese, buy yeah that happens a lot. People tend to lecture people on stuff like that because it’s preventable. Just like obesity is, however there are more questions that pertain more to low weight.

Just my opinion :]
And yes, I agree with everything you said.

Ok, let me just say I am not concerned about detoxification or fasting for religious reasons, simply for weight loss because I need to slim down for gymnastics. I need to know the straight facts. I was on this fasting website called fasting.ws and they made it seem like the ONLY thing you could drink was either juice from a juicer or water, or a certain “specific” kind of tea. Cant you lose weight from drinking ANYTHING that isnt fattening, sugary, ect? I thought the whole goal was to stop your body from digesting, so wouldnt any drink be fine? Is drinking, say, plain tea or diet soda less effective for weight loss than water or juicing? Someone please just give me the straight facts.
…Thanks Sean, but I was talking about drinking.
You make a good point Byant but theres no way Im reading that entire book. I was actually wondering if stopping your digestive system during a fast was for the detox or weight loss. If its for the detox, I dont care

When fasting you do not consume anything but water. Anyone saying anything else doesn’t have a clue. If you can use google you can soon find out anyway.
At risk of getting deleted, here’s a great PUBLIC DOMAIN NO PROFIT WEBSITE WITH AN 100 YEARS OLD BOOK OF FASTING BY THE BEST AUTHORITY ON THE SUBJECT STARTING FROM PAGE ONE:
http://www.soilandhealth.org/02/0201hyglibcat/020127shelton.III/020127.ch1.htm
Please be careful about fasting UNLESS YOU BUILD KNOWLEDGE ON IT.
Ignorance when fasting will KILL YOU.
Knowledge will bring you immense benefit.
Just read the whole book, word by word at least twice then good luck. I do it every year.

PS: only Sean on this page had a clue, pity he brought religion into it.
Don’t trust any of the noise around you dude, read the book and get your knowledge. I stress that doing this WRONG will HURT you, EG: drinking TEA will just CONFUSE YOUR BODY.
Have you ever heard the word “PANCREAS” ?? yes? it’s in your body and part of your digestive system. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancreas Do you know what’s in juice? Yes? (maybe sugar??) Do you know what part of your digestive system processes sugars? Enough said, if you care get your knowledge.

im hearing good things about the water fast. not for weight loss reasons but for detoxification of ur whole body both physically and mentally… however some ppl are still against it?

and that means drinking water and no food for like 3 days to a weekish?
umm third answer..its drinking water not eating food

Not drinking water is a quick way to lose weight. It’s what wrestlers do to make the cut (and bodybuilders do it to get the most definition), but they only do it for a day or two, and even then they drink a little water. Furthermore, they all understand it’s VERY dangerous; it tires you out and has no real health benefits.

I’m taking two vitamins every day for skin hair and nails. Should I suspend the intake of these vitamins during my fast? I mean, will it actually HURT the outcome of the fast if I take them?

and for those people who start preaching about how fasting doesnt work and has no benefits, you need to do your homework. It has a LOT of benefits if done properly including body detoxification, energy gain, mind clarity, clear skin, better digestion, release from depression, etc. This isn’t primarily a weight loss thing. So dont ask my why im doing it, its NOT dangerous. I just want to know if I can still take my vitamins. If you dont know anything about fasting, stay away

I wouldn’t. Alot of vitamins say take with food/milk because the food helps the body process the vitamin.
Also, i’ve taken vitamins on an empty stomach before, and it has made me feel sick.
I don’t know the point of your fast, but if you are doing it for mind/body/soul purification, I don’t recommend taking vitamins, because your body will still have to process them. When you go on a fast, your body will clear out all the toxins and will start to regenerate organs. Since the vitamins will still have to be processed through the liver and other organs, I don’t think your body will be able to regenerate itself because it has to do additional work of processing the vitamins.
